The latest monthly sale at the Shouler & Son County Auction Rooms in Melton Mowbray saw a total 525 lots and attracted the attention of circa 300 registered bidders - both online and in person, including commissions, as well as a number of casual visiting visitors.

The General Household, Vintage and Collectables on 19th January curated together an eclectic range of items and was the first Shoulers sale where no guide prices were indicated in the catalogue.

Star performers on the day in the auction room ranged from a diesel generator sold at hammer for £340, a vintage chrome watch - £280 hammer price, a Nordic wooden work bench, originating in Sweden, sold for £260 on the day and a Chinese lacquered folding dressing screen and a gold & sapphire dress ring both attracting final bids of £200.

There was competitive bidding on the day for a box collection of costume jewellery on which a final bid of £160 proved successful and £110 secured secured an early 20 Century miniature (known to collectors as ‘compact’) Schuco Teddy Bear after keen bidding.

The sale was conducted by Shoulers Partner & Auctioneer, Ben Shouler and Ian King, County Auction Rooms Manager.

Speaking about the success of the first sale of the year and also as the first one Shoulers has held without guide prices indicated in the pre-sale catalogue, Ian King said,

“The absence of pre-sale guide prices is a growing trend for auction houses in our sector and it was one we were happy to pilot for the first time at Shoulers County Auction Rooms.

“In looking at the lots sold and the hammer prices achieved, we can only conclude that the absence of indicative prices had a positive effect on successful lots sold.

“It’s something we will be keeping a close eye on in forthcoming sales this year.”

The next two sales of 2023 at the Shouler & Son County Auction Rooms are General Household, Vintage and Collectables on Thursday 16th February and Antiques, Vintage & Collectables on Thursday 23rd March.

Auctions are open to members of the public, dealers and general visitors, but online or in-room bidders must pre-register.
